DMX原名Earl Simmons，1970年12月18日出生于美国马里兰州的巴尔的摩市，在幼年时和他破碎的家庭一起搬到了纽约东南部的Yonkers市。他的童年生活和大多数说唱歌手一样充满了荆棘，在混乱和充满着暴力，犯罪的街头长大，并且他自己也时常参与犯罪活动。童年的时代充满了血腥和肮脏，这也直接影响了他以后的残暴的性格和暴躁的脾气，以及喜好攻击他人的癖病。在幸运的活到成年以后，他开始把注意力投放到说唱音乐中，并且开始在一些地方担任DJ。后来他开始在城市的边缘地区进行较为正式的表演并且把名字取为DMX，意思是Dark Man X。
